I was there investigating the proposal of Kawsak Sacha (The Living Jungle\/ Forest) that Sarayaku had launched, in order to protect the jungle\u2019s visible and invisible beings (who are considered to have legal personhood and therefore to be bearers of legal rights). You can find the articles I wrote <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">about<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that <a href=\"https:\/\/research.vu.nl\/en\/publications\/chicha-coronavirus-1-0-on-trust-natural-disasters-and-pandemics-i\">here<\/a>, <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.vu.nl\/en\/publications\/we-protect-the-forest-beings-and-the-forest-beings-protect-us-cul\">here<\/a>,<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/research.vu.nl\/en\/publications\/%CE%BA%CE%BF%CF%83%CE%BC%CE%BF%CF%80%CE%BF%CE%BB%CE%B9%CF%84%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AD%CF%82-%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%85-%CF%80%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%BA%CF%8C%CF%83%CE%BC%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%85-%CE%BD%CF%8C%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%85-%CF%84%CE%BF-buen-vivir-%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B7-%CE%B6%CF%8E%CF%83%CE%B1-%CE%B6%CE%BF%CF%8D%CE%B3%CE%BA%CE%BB\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/research.vu.nl\/en\/publications\/protecting-the-forest-beings-that-protect-us-the-cosmo-political-\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">While I was there, two very important events took place one after the other and both were historical: the first for the community, and the second for the world. <\/span><\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">On the night of the 17<\/span><sup><span lang=\"en-GB\">th<\/span><\/sup><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of March 2020, Sarayaku experienced the biggest flood in the community\u2019s living memory. I happened to be there together with photographer Evangelos Daskalakis, exactly on the side of Bobonaza river that was more severely affected by the flood, a part that the community calls sector pista, and Kushillu (the monkeys\u2019 hill). <\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"en-GB\">The day after, Ecuador closed its borders to the world, and the world to Ecuador due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span lang=\"en-GB\">It was <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">our<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> Malinowskian moment.<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span lang=\"en-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/?attachment_id=389\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-389\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-389\" src=\"https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200317_144324-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200317_144324-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200317_144324-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200317_144324-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200317_144324-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200317_144324-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">I have described <\/span><a style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\" href=\"https:\/\/research.vu.nl\/en\/publications\/chicha-coronavirus-1-0-on-trust-natural-disasters-and-pandemics-i\">elsewhere<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\"> what happened during the flood, and how the community dealt both with it and with the COVID-19 pandemic<\/span><\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Now, four years later, it all seems very distant, at the time however, it was the biggest crisis both Sarayaku and the world had experienced for a very very long time. Myself too.<\/span><\/p><p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">This double disaster created a double problem for me and Evangelos Daskalakis: first, we had to save our own lives and help the members of the community save their<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">s,<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and their livelihoods as well; and, secondly, we had to find a way to get to Puyo first, from there to Quito, and from Quito to Europe, and Greece, with <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">all <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">borders and all means of transport blocked.<\/span><\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">T<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">his research project was born exactly then: t<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">rying to get out of the Amazonia <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">to<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> reach Puyo. It is what social scientists call serendipity that brought it into being, and it all happened by chance. In a way, I didn\u2019t find it- it <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">rather<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> found me. <\/span><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/?attachment_id=390\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-390\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-390\" src=\"https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200318_063746-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200318_063746-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200318_063746-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200318_063746-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200318_063746-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_20200318_063746-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">To make it to Puyo from Sarayaku, one has two options: either <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">travelling<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> by canoe, of flying in a small <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>avioneta<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">. With the pista flooded, the latter was out of the question so we opted for the former. About a week after the flood, Sarayaku G<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">o<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">verning council decided to send a delegation to Puyo to bring food and emergency kits for the community, and they agreed to take us onboard, leave us in Puyo, and from there we would try to find a way to make it to Quito and ,eventually, Greece. <\/span><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Between Sarayaku and Canelos, where the road to Puyo begins, lies the community of Pacayaku. When we arrived there, we found out that the members of the community had blocked the river-pass with very long ropes that extended from one river bank to the other. After some negotiations they did let us go through, but when we asked them why they had blocked the river they gave us the following explanations:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span lang=\"en-GB\">For the balsa mafias not to enter. <\/span><\/i><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span lang=\"en-GB\">I had no idea what balsa was, why would mafias be interested in it, and what it was used for. <\/span><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Eventually, I made it to Puyo, and from there to Quito, but I had to remain stranded in Ecuador for three more months, so I had all the time in the world to investigate the issue. <\/span><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span lang=\"en-GB\">What I found out was enough to win a <a href=\"https:\/\/rumbosdeleonidas.net\/?page_id=239\">Marie Sklodowska Curie Individual Fellowship,<\/a> to further investigate the issue. <\/span><\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span lang=\"en-GB\">What I keep finding out in my research, will be (ir)regularly posted on this blog. <\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/p><p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"line-height: 1.15px; margin-bottom: 0.28cm; direction: ltr; background: transparent; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\" align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"nofuss_excerpt\"><p>\u00a0 Bad luck \u00a0 In<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":378,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-376","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-flybal-blog-post"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.0 -
